There are two methods of testing of an inductor, such as:
1. Measurement of inductance.
2. Testing of open and short.
A.C Bridge like Hay, Carey Foster or universal bridges are used for precision measurement of inductors. Simple multimeter tests can be performed for the measurement of specific value of D.C resistance.
When the inductor is short, it has zero resistance value.
When the inductor is open it has infinite resistance value.
Testing of an inductor using color band system.
The color-coding on the inductor is shown in the figure. The color code indicates the value of inductance in µH. The gold band is used to represent the decimal point.
